The University of Delaware congratulates Joe Biden
The University of Delaware congratulates alumnus Joseph R. Biden Jr., vice president-elect of the United States. Biden is a 1965 graduate of UD, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in history and political science.
Rally on campus
Joe Biden kicked off the last leg of his campaign tour with a campaign rally on the University of Delaware Green on Oct. 31, 2008. Standing on the steps of Memorial Hall, he recalled his years as an undergraduate student at UD and the role that University faculty members played in shaping his life. “During my years on campus here, some of the most transformative events of my generation took place,” he said before a crowd of about 6,000 persons.

Honorary degree
Joe Biden, Class of 1965, was inducted into the UD Alumni Wall of Fame in1984 and was welcomed back to campus in 2004 to deliver the Commencement address and to receive an honorary degree.

Joe Biden is married to Jill Jacobs-Biden, also a University of Delaware graduate. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1975 and her doctorate in education in 2006.
UD is 2008 election ‘epicenter’
The University of Delaware has had deep involvement in the 2008 presidential election, with vice presidential candidate Joe Biden and senior advisers Steven Schmidt, working for the campaign of Republican John McCain, and David Plouffe, working for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama. That led Nicholas Johnston of Bloomberg News to write, “The academic epicenter of this year's presidential election isn't, as in some years past, Harvard or Yale. It's located between Baltimore and Philadelphia at the University of Delaware.”

Joe Biden was the special guest during a broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball College Tour” with Chris Matthews in 2003 at Mitchell Hall. The event drew a standing room only crowd.
