2010 Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) Enrollment

November 10 through November 24

Flexible Spending Accounts

FSAs are voluntary accounts through which you can set aside pre-tax dollars to cover out-of-pocket health care and day care expenses. The maximum annual contribution is $3,000 for the Health Care Account and $5,000 per family for the Dependent Day Care Account. The minimum annual amount you can contribute is $120 for either account. FSAs do not automatically continue from year to year. You must re-enroll each year to continue your participation.

Through Ceridian Benefits Services, our third-party FSA administrator, we are able to offer a Benefits Card that is linked to your health care FSA.  You may use the Benefits Card to pay eligible health care expenses directly from your flexible spending account. There are several ways to access your FSA account, including an automated Voice Response system, Customer Service representatives, and an Internet website (to submit a claim online, to check claim status, and to see claim payments, etc.).

More Information

Please see our website for additional information about the Flexible Spending Accounts Plan, Frequently Asked Questions, the results of our September 2009 employee FSA survey and a letter from Ceridian Benefits Services expressing their commitment to improving their administrative processes and service to our campus community.

Enrollment Is Easy

  • You can enroll in a Health Care and/or Dependent (Day) Care FSA for calendar year 2010 using our FSA Enrollment Form.
  • Enter your annual contribution amount for the Health Care and/or Dependent Care FSA. Your "per pay" deduction will automatically be displayed.
  • After you have entered your contribution amount(s), "submit" your election, then exit the form.
  • A confirmation page will be displayed. Please print a copy of this page for your records.
  • If you change your mind, you may access the Enrollment Form and submit a new election. Note: your most recent entry will be taken as your election for the year.

FSA Plan Year

The University's plan year for FSAs is January through December. Once your enrollment in the account(s) is finalized, you cannot change or stop your contribution for the remainder of the calendar year, unless you have a qualified family status change (e.g., marriage, divorce, birth/adoption of a child, etc.).

Other Benefits Enrollment

The enrollment period for the University's benefits program (i.e., medical, dental, vision, life and disability) is tentatively scheduled for May 3-21, 2010. If you anticipate changing your medical plan coverage in May, consider how that future change may impact your decision on "how much" to contribute to a 2010 Health Care FSA.

Your FSA Contribution

Please keep in mind that the Flexible Spending Accounts Plan includes a 2½ month grace period. This means that a participant who incurs expenses during the grace period may be reimbursed from contributions made in the preceding year (2010). This provides additional time to take advantage of FSA contributions before the amounts are forfeited under the "use-it-or-lose-it" rule. If, however, you do not spend all your 2010 FSA money for expenses you incur through the March 15, 2011 grace period, you will forfeit any unused balance.
