HTH Health Insurance and SOS Travel Assistance

During winter and summer session, as well as fall and spring semester study abroad programs, students are automatically covered under the University's insurance policy with HTH Worldwide. (This coverage does NOT apply to students on domestic travel study programs.) Several months before the start of your program, you will receive an automated e-mail from HTH which contains your insurance certificate number and instructions for logging in and registering on the HTH web site. From there you'll be able to print out an insurance card, as well as look up health and safety information and search for health care providers at your study abroad destination. From the site you can also download a claim form, replace a lost I.D. card, check the status of a pending claim, and try out the medical translation guide. Perhaps most importantly, the policy provides you and your faculty director with round-the-clock toll-free access to expert HTH personnel, which can be invaluable in the event of a medical emergency.

Before departure you will receive a laminated insurance card. Be sure to take this card with you when you go abroad. Make a copy of it and keep the copy in a safe place—somewhere other than in your wallet in case your wallet gets lost or stolen. Get information on coverages and exclusions here. NOTE that HTH does not cover injuries sustained due to engagement in high-risk activities such as skydiving, bungee jumping or scuba diving, nor when the injured individual is legally intoxicated. Please read this information carefully before you depart. You can access more information relevant to international travelers on HTH's blog and by downloading this flyer.

If you should ever need to submit a claim to HTH, here is a quick link to the claim form.

Please note: HTH charges an additional fee to cover students age 75 and older. This fee will vary depending on the length of the program but may amount to $500 or more. The exact fee for such students will be calculated on a case-by-case basis.

Because this insurance policy provides substantial coverage for medical evacuation, repatriation of remains, and medical treatment, we do not recommend that students on winter or summer study abroad programs purchase the International Student I.D. card for coverage unless they plan to travel on their own outside of the program dates.

The University of Delaware also provides all faculty and students with emergency travel assistance through International SOS. This policy provides substantial coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, as well as some travel assistance such as legal referrals and assistance with lost documents. Note that International SOS is not a health insurance policy (unlike the HTH policy described above). Please read the information on the UD portal of the International SOS Web site to find out more about coverage and exclusions. With your airline ticket you will receive a SOS card containing the UD log-in number.
