Study of the U.S. Institutes

on Foreign Policymaking

The Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars and Secondary Educators (SUSI), by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, are 5 to 6 week academic programs for mid-career foreign scholars, faculty, practitioners and secondary educators hosted by colleges and universities across the United States. These post-graduate level academic programs are designed to provide participants: 1.) A deeper understanding of United States history, society, education and culture; 2.) New skills and academic information that could be incorporated into home country curricula; and 3.) A pedagogical model for how international universities might approach the study of U.S. culture and society.

Focused on U.S. foreign policymaking, this program annually provides 18 participants a wide array of activities to facilitate more informed exchanges between experts in the United States and other countries. The goal is that these exchanges will grow a long-lasting global epistemic community.

To accomplish this, the intensive academic program includes lectures, readings, roundtable discussions, open forums, guided tours and social activities with faculty, students and local communities. The program is designed to consider U.S. foreign policy from both theoretical and applied approaches, as participants will engage diverse speakers who offer unique perspectives on the processes of U.S. foreign policymaking.

The University of Delaware has long been recognized as a leader in international education. It was an early pioneer in study abroad and now regularly hosts groups of undergraduate, graduate and professional students from abroad, providing them with creative programs blending academics and cultural enrichment.

Our Location

The University of Delaware is an East Coast classic. Our location, midway between New York City and Washington, DC, allows participants access to meaningful connections, resources and opportunities. Delaware’s picture-perfect and ideal-sized campus is a walkable, historic space with grand architecture and a central green lawn (called “The Green”) for informal gathering and special events. Our home is the iconic college town of Newark, Delaware whose Main Street is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. Together, these attributes create a secure and welcoming environment for all members of the University community.
