Faculty spotlight

Dan Leathers

Professor, College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment

Dan Leathers, professor in the Department of Geography, is an expert in meteorology and climatology who is known for mentoring students and serving as a social connector between UD and partners across the state and nation.

As Delaware’s State Climatologist, Leathers serves a pivotal role in assisting state officials and emergency managers with decision-making tools to ensure public safety during significant natural hazards. He also directs UD’s Center for Environmental Monitoring & Analysis, a statewide resource for environmental, atmospheric and remote sensing data.

Leathers, who celebrates 30 years of teaching this year, recently served as president of the American Association of State Climatologists. His research interests include understanding the role snow cover plays in the global climate system, how natural and human induced land-surface changes influence regional climates, and more.
