How to migrate from Mirapoint to Outlook
and the Exchange server

  1. Pre-Migration Steps
    1. Empty the Junk E-mail folder on Mirapoint using Webmail Direct or other e-mail client such as Mozilla or Firefox.
    2. Have the user delete e-mail that is no longer needed. Empty the Trash folder and compact folders. Verify which folders need to be transferred to the Exchange account.
    3. Export the e-mail address book as a .csv file.
    4. Copy bookmarks from Mozilla, Netscape, or Firefox to Internet Explorer favorites (optional).
    5. Start forwarding e-mail from Mirapoint to the Exchange server (http://www.udel.edu/network).
  1. Move e-mail from Mirapoint Webmail Direct or other e-mail client to Microsoft Outlook
    1. After the Exchange account is set up in Microsoft Outlook, and forwarding has been turned on, create an IMAP connection to Mirapoint. For Outlook 2003, follow these steps:
      1. From the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
      2. Click the Add a new e-mail account radio button.
      3. Click Next.
      4. Click IMAP.
      5. Click Next.
      6. Fill in the user’s name, username, and e-mail address. Have the user type in his/her password, and verify the Remember Password checkbox has been checked. Set the incoming and outgoing mail servers to mail.udel.edu.
      7. Click Next.
      8. Click Finished.
    2. For Outlook 2007, follow these steps:
      1. From the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
      2. Click New.
      3. Choose Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP.

    NOTE
Make sure the Manually configure server settings or additional server types box is NOT checked.

    1. Click Next.
    2. Click the Internet E-mail radio button.
    3. Click Next.
    4. Fill in the username and e-mail address. Set the account type to IMAP. Have the user type in his/her password, and verify the remember password checkbox has been checked. Set the incoming and outgoing mail servers to mail.udel.edu.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Click Finish.
  1. Transfer the mail from the IMAP (Mirapoint) account to the MAPI (Exchange) account.

In the folder pane, the user’s IMAP account will appear under UDelNetID@udel.edu or mail.udel.edu. The Exchange account will appear under last name, first name. In Outlook, drag the folders that the user created from the IMAP account to the Exchange account.

Exceptions: Do not, unless requested, transfer any e-mail in the Junk E-mail and Trash folders. For the Inbox, Drafts, and Sent folders, open each folder and select all messages. Move the draft messages in Mirapoint to the Drafts folder in Outlook, and move the Sent folder messages to the Sent Items folder in Outlook, etc.

  1. Migrating Local Mail from previous e-mail client to Outlook Personal Folders

    Options:

    • Keep the old e-mail client on the computer. Have the user access messages prior to the Exchange account set up via the previous client. Have the user forward messages to him- or herself, if messages need to be transferred.
    • Temporarily move Local Mail to the Mirapoint Server using the drag-and-drop method via the previous e-mail client. Transfer the e-mail to Outlook using an IMAP connection to Mirapoint in Outlook. Drag folders from the Exchange account to Personal Folders in Outlook.

IMPORTANT
If you do use Outlook’s import feature to import local e-mail from Outlook Express, make sure to select Personal folders before proceeding with the import. Otherwise, all the local e-mail may be imported to the Exchange server. Removing the network cable will make sure the e-mail isn’t imported to the server
.

  1. Remove the IMAP connection from Outlook
    1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
    2. From the Tools menu, click E-mail accounts.
    3. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts.
    4. Click Next.
    5. Select the IMAP/SMTP account.
    6. Click Remove, Yes, and then Finish.
    7. If using Outlook 2007, go to  ToolsAccount Settings, select the IMAP/SMTP account, then click the Remove button. Click Yes when prompted. Click the Close button.
  1. Migrate Address book to contact
    1. Open the Mozilla Address book.
    2. Select the Personal Address book.
    3. Export this file as a .csv file. If a user has an address book in Mirapoint Webmail Direct, have the user log in to Webmail, and use the address book import/export utility to export the address book as a .csv file.
    4. Open Microsoft Outlook.
    5. From the File menu, click Import.
    6. Click Import from another program or file–Comma Separated Values (Windows).
    7. Use Browse to select the exported .csv file.
    8. Click Next.
    9. Select the destination folder.
    10. Click Next.
    11. Click Finish.

You may be prompted to map the address book fields to Microsoft Outlook contact fields.

NOTE
The user should check the entries that have been entered to the Outlook contacts. Corrections may be needed. If the import process does not work well, try to import the contacts from Mozilla or Webmail to Outlook Express, then to Microsoft Outlook
.
