Homecoming Weekend festivities feature football, art loop, tailgates and class reunions

3:33 p.m., Sept. 26, 2003--UD’s Homecoming Weekend 2003, Friday-Sunday, Oct. 17-19, officially begins with the presentation of Presidential Citations for Outstanding Achievement, honoring graduates of the past 20 years who exhibit great promise in their professional careers and/or public service activities, at 4:30 p.m., Friday, in Mitchell Hall.

A reception will be held for alumni from the classes of 1953, 1958 and 1983, which are holding reunions this year, and for members of the Delaware Diamonds Society from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Mentors’ Circle. In case of rain, the reception will be held in Memorial Hall.

Other special events are scheduled for classes holding reunions.

The Black Alumni Organization has several activities scheduled including a Friday reception, Saturday golf outing and a barbecue at the Center for Black Culture and a Sunday worship service.

The second annual art loop, with tours of art exhibits and studios, will be held by the College of Arts and Science from 7-10 p.m., Friday, starting in the University Gallery. The art loop also will include a cabaret program, “Poetry into Jazz, featuring English professor Marilyn Nelson, from 7:15-8 p.m. and again from 8:30-9:15 p.m. in the lower level of Old College. Saturday, the college will offer a new Alumni College program, featuring classes by seven faculty, followed by a Dean’s Reception and a jazz concert. Reservations are requested for all activities. The centerpiece of Homecoming Weekend is the football game when the Fightin’ Blue Hens face off with the University of Rhode island at noon, Saturday, in Delaware Stadium. There will be a special halftime presentation of the Outstanding Alumni Awards and UD’s Spirit Ambassadors.

Before the game, the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics Alumni Association, the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy Alumni Association, the Nursing Alumni Association classes of 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993 and 1998 and the Physical Therapy Department will hold special tailgate events.

The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics Alumni Association will honor outstanding alumni in a ceremony at 4 p.m., Saturday, in the Chaplin Tyler Atrium of MBNA America Hall.

Sunday, public ice skating will be offered from 1-3 p.m. in the Fred Rust Ice Arena. Admission is $5 per person and free to students, plus a $2 skate rental fee.
