UD alum to read from ’The Unspeakable’

Denise Brown

11:25 a.m., March 23, 2007--Denise Brown, AS '81, '87M, will read from her book, The Unspeakable, recently published by the University of Delaware Press, at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 12, in the Reserve Room of the Morris Library. A reception will follow.

A haunting memoir, The Unspeakable charts the difficult path Brown walked following the shooting death of her husband Otho (Ott) Brown, 69'BE.

In 1998 a disgruntled employee went on a rampage at the Connecticut
Lottery Corp., killing four executives, including Ott Brown, before turning the gun on himself. In the book Denise Brown, an unexpected widow, searches for answers and gives voice to the story left untold by the media. As she traces the path from bitterness to hope she tells the complicated story of grief that is the legacy of violence.

The lack of candor that surrounds society's “love affair” with violence is one element that, Brown said, moved her to write her book. “Someone should tell the truth,” she says in The Unspeakable, while handing over important documents about the crime to an editor and reporter at an unnamed newspaper.

David Kaczynski, executive director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty, says Brown's work “should help us speak more honestly about violence and loss.”

While not an activist, Brown writes and speaks about healing after violence; she also writes about local history, food and family life. She lives in the Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont with her three children.

The event is free and open to the public. All interested persons are invited to attend and/or to call (302) 831-2231 or to send an e-mail to [jhamm@udel.edu] to reserve a place at the reading.

Copies of The Unspeakable will be available for $26.95 at the event and can be signed by the author. The book also is available at the UD Bookstore, where faculty, staff and students can get a 10 percent discount with their UD IDs.
