Join the fall Arrival Survivor Team

4:32 p.m., June 1, 2005--Moving-in day at UD marks an exciting milestone for first year students, as well as their parents, as they begin an important new stage of their lives. This year, New Student Check-in Day will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 27.

Thanks to UD’s Arrival Survivor Team, new students receive a warm welcome to the University, as well as help moving their belongings into residence halls. The team provides a real “hands-on” service for freshmen, transfer students and families and just as importantly makes them feel a part of the UD community, according to Cathy Skelley, assistant director of residence life.

The Arrival Survivor Team is a community effort when students, alumni, faculty and staff join together to welcome new students on campus. Last year, the team numbered more than 600 persons, and persons from the Newark community pitched in as well, including Mayor Vance Funk and Councilman Kevin J. Vonck.

“It’s fun to be part of the action, and we encourage everyone to participate,” Skelley said. “This year Facilities- Planning and Construction has volunteered as a group to move students into the new George Read Hall.

“If any other office or academic unit would like to work together and ‘adopt a residence hall,’ that can be arranged,” she said. “Faculty and staff may also ask to be assigned to the residence hall where their LIFE (Learning Integrated Freshman Experience) cluster is housed.”

Besides openings for “baggage carriers,” there are limited opportunities to be Lobby Greeters, welcoming students and parents and directing them to the check-in table or their rooms. Shifts for team members are three hours from 8-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.

The Arrival Survivor Team began 15 years ago when Sigma Chi fraternity formed a team to assist first-year students in the Dickinson Complex. Residence Life assumed the responsibility for the project 13 years ago, and it has grown into a successful service that is much appreciated by new students and families.

Faculty, staff and alumni are asked to register online to join the Arrival Survivor Team by Friday, July 22, and students are asked to register by Friday, Aug. 12.

More specific information on times and locations will be sent by e-mail in early August, and to make the day go smoothly and to help team members, a mandatory orientation on Friday, Aug. 26, has been tentatively scheduled in Pearson Hall auditorium at a time to be determined.
