What is the Arrival Survival Team?

The Arrival Survival Team (AST) is a group of volunteers who help new students move their luggage and other belongings into their residence hall rooms on New Student Check-in Day. This activity assists students and their parents in their transition to the University, is the first step in extending a warm welcome to them, and begins to build the strong and positive community that enhances every student's living and learning experience. Because our first year students are busy moving in and getting oriented to the campus, they may not volunteer to be on the Arrival Survival Team.

History

Twenty years ago, the Sigma Chi fraternity developed the team as a service project to assist the first year students in the Dickinson Complex. The Office of Residence Life assumed responsibility for the program seventeen years ago and the team has grown every year. Last Fall, more than 700 people served on the AST!

When Would I Check in for the Fall?

  • AST members who are living on campus will check in to their permanent Fall room assignments during the standard early check-in time Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm.

  • There can be no exceptions to this check-in time. As a member of AST We are pleased to be able to offer a discounted rate for early check-in of $75.00 – failure to report for your shift will result in a full charge for early check-in of $50.00 per night for a total of $150.00

What Areas of Campus will be Served this Year?

All areas of campus that house First year students will be served on New Student Check-in Day Saturday, August 27, 2011 (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)

The majority of Freshmen live in the following locations:

  • West Campus
    • Dickinson Complex
    • Rodney Complex

  • East Campus
    • Harrington Complex
    • Russell Complex
    • Lane Hall
    • Thompson Hall

  • Laird Campus
    • George Read Hall

What Help Do We Need this Fall?

We will need student, faculty, staff and alumni volunteers to carry luggage and other belongings to student rooms and answer questions that students and their families may have.

  • If desired you may request to be assigned with 1 friend or as a group if you are a member of an RSO
  • Request a preferred shift:  8 am -11 am, 10 am -1 pm, 11 am -2 pm, and 1 pm – 4 pm and a preferred location (East, West, Laird).  An additional shift of 2-5pm will be offered on a limited basis-if interested in this shift please indicate on the comment section of the registration for
  • We will do our best to accommodate your request. Most freshmen live on East or West Campus so we will need the majority of volunteers there.

When do I Find Out Exactly What Shift, Location and What to do on Check-in Day?

  • In mid-August you will receive an email to your UD email address reminding you of the early check-in dates and times as well as instructions for the on-line training that you MUST READ.
  • All AST volunteers will need to come to the Residence Life Office (5 Courtney St.) on Friday, August 26th between the hours of 8:00am - 6:00pm to pick up their t-shirt, assignments and to confirm that they have read the on-line information. The office will close promptly at 6:00pm.
  • On Opening Day:
Report to the Arrival Survival Team Leader in the area that you have been assigned. Sign in and out at the same location. Your Team Leader will give you instructions about your duties, orient you to the area, and tell you where to make contacts with students/parents.
  • If you do not show up or fail to sign in/out and work your entire shift you will be charged the daily early check in rate.
