Methane Emissions

OUR UD | A new UD study has shown that tree trunks in upland forests emit methane rather than store it, representing a new, previously unaccounted source of this powerful greenhouse gas.

Twenty-five times stronger than carbon dioxide, methane is critical to our understanding of global warming. “We believe our work can help fill in some gaps in methane budgets and environmental processes in global ecosystem models,” says assistant professor of plant and soil sciences Rodrigo Vargas, who worked on the project with lead author and doctoral student Daniel Warner, ANR19PhD.
