During a late-night brainstorming session in June 2014 to determine the safest, fastest way to repair and re-open a heavily traveled bridge over the Christina River on I-495 in Wilmington, Del., Robert McCleary, EG87, chief engineer with the Delaware Department of Transportation, couldn’t help but think of his structural analysis course. His professor, the late Arnold Kerr, was known to say, “Someday when you have to design a bridge over a weekend, you’re going to have to know how to do this!”

That came true last summer when he and numerous UD alumni led the emergency bridge repair project.
