Delle Donne named to preseason Wooden list
SPORTS | Women's basketball forward/guard Elena Delle Donne has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason List, one of just four sophomores on the list and one of two Colonial Athletic Association nominees.
After the 2009-10 season, Delle Donne was one of 20 finalists for the Wooden National Player of the Year Award and was the first Blue Hen to be named to the All-America team. In her first season, she was selected as both the CAA Player and Rookie of the Year after averaging a league-best 26.7 points per game, ranking her third in the country. She broke 18 records in her rookie campaign and, in just 29 games, was already in the top 30 all-time in scoring.
Joining Delle Donne on the list is fellow CAA member senior Dawn Evans from James Madison, as well as 2009 Wooden Award Winner Maya Moore from Connecticut. A midseason list will be released in December, followed by the official voting ballot in March. The winners of the 35th annual Wooden Award will be announced during the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hen women opened their regular season Nov. 12 at the Bob Carpenter Center, where they will play 14 games this season. The men's squad, which opened its season on the road Nov. 13 and played its home opener Nov. 19, will play 12 regular-season games at the Bob Carpenter Center.
