IT offers professional development classes

5:30 p.m., Sept. 26, 2007--Have you taken on a new task such as creating or maintaining a web site but are wondering how to begin? You can begin by registering for the free four-part class “Web Publishing” offered through the Information Technologies (IT) Learning Resources program. The classes are held on campus, making them a convenient option to get you started.

The first in a series of articles spotlighting these educational resources, the focus of this article is the program's Professional Development class calendar.

Classes are open to the campus community and cover a wide range of topics. And, the curriculum offers options for different learning styles: If you prefer to learn in a face-to-face setting, instructor-led classes are available; if you prefer to learn at your own pace, instructor-assisted classes are available.

To view the calendar, go to [www.present.udel.edu/calendar] to see a month-to-month list of classes. A search feature is available to help you find topics easily. From the “Select Calendar” pull-down menu at the top-left of the window, choose the topic that interests you. Then click “Go.” If the “Calendar View” option is selected, you will see the classes in a calendar format. If the “List View” option is selected, you will see the classes in a list format.

Some of the classes offered this semester are listed below.

Web Publishing: Part I--Covers the basic concepts of web site creation. Macromedia Dreamweaver will be used in conjunction with HTML coding. Topics include structural page elements, layout techniques, text formatting, bulleted and numbered lists, links and graphics.

ePortfolios for Learning and Assessment--Web-based eportfolios are becoming a popular and powerful way to describe, reflect on and demonstrate what students know. ePortfolios represent a technology and a pedagogical approach for facilitating integration of formal and informal educational experiences, regardless of the program of study. This class will review the basic issues and challenges related to eportfolio activity.

Getting the Most from the Web of Science--The Web of Science database allows you to see how often particular works and authors have been cited and provides access to general research in a number of disciplines. This class, which is taught by the University of Delaware Library, covers research techniques to analyze the citation history of articles and ways to use Article Express, the document retrieval system that works in conjunction with Web of Science.

Presentation Tips for PowerPoint and Keynote--This class will present tips and techniques to leverage your basic knowledge of PowerPoint or Keynote. You will learn specific techniques that elevate the comprehension and retention of a presentation. This session will examine the appearance, sound, and pace of presentations and is appropriate for Mac and Windows users of PowerPoint and Mac users of Keynote.

Watch for upcoming UDaily articles in this series. Future articles will include information about self-paced materials, web-based training and the PRESENT.
