5:12 p.m., Sept. 17, 2007--Karen Rosenberg, chairperson of anthropology and associate professor of women studies, will appear on “Explorer: Science of Babies” at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, on the National Geographic Channel, which is carried locally on Comcast 109. The program will be rebroadcast at 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, and again at noon, Sunday, Sept. 23.

Rosenberg will be interviewed about brain evolution in human babies and its effect on the birth process. Her remarks will focus on the timing of birth relative to brain growth and the way babies have to twist and turn as they pass through the birth canal, Rosenberg said.

“In July of 2006, there was an article in National Geographic entitled 'The Downside of Upright' that began with a discussion of my work on why human women give birth the way they do,” Rosenberg said. “After reading that, they decided to interview me for this film about babies.”

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Rosenberg received her doctorate in biological anthropology from the University of Michigan and joined the University of Delaware in 1987.
