Rudi Matthee, professor of history, “Facing a Rude and Barbarous Nation: Iranian Perceptions of Russia and the Russians in the Qajar Period,” at Iranian Identity Boundaries and Modern Political Culture conference, April 25-27, Yale University; and “The Safavids under Western Eyes: 17th Century European Travelers to Iran,” May 8, Houghton Library, Harvard University on the occasion of the opening of two exhibitions: From Rhubarb to Rubies: European Travel to Safavid Iran, 1500-1700 and The Land of the Sophi: Iran in Early Modern European Maps.

Staff members associated with the Center for Disabilities Studies presented the following workshops during the Week of the Young Child Celebration Conference, April 19, at Delaware Technical and Community College, Terry Campus, in Dover: Steven John Holochwost, associate director of research, and Bianca Graves, research coordinator, both of the Early Learning Center, “Early Childhood Behavioral Assessments”; Beth Inter, associate director, Early Learning Center, “Supervision: Firm and Fair”; Michael Partie, program coordinator, and Debby Boyer, project director, both of the Center for Disabilities Studies, “Positive Approaches to Challenging Behavior”; and Debbie Amsden, project director-early childhood, Heidi Beck, project director, and Vanessa Harper, program coordinator, both of New Directions Early Head Start, and Cynthia Slater, nutrition assistant, UD Cooperative Extension, “A Vision for Inclusion in Early Care and Education.”

Members of the Center for Disabilities Studies coordinated Delaware's third annual conference for direct support professionals, May 1, at the Sheraton Dover Hotel. C. Renee Settles-Bean, training coordinator, served as co-chairman of the conference planning committee, and Timothy F. Brooks, disabilities specialist, delivered the keynote address. Presentations were given by Ilka Riddle, project leader, and Cory Nourie, trainer, “Zensational You”; Fran Fletcher, assistant policy scientist, Institute for Public Administration, “Got Conflict? Who Doesn't? So Communicate Your Way Out of It”; Marianne Carter, director, Delaware Center for Health Promotion, “Be Healthy Delaware”; and Lisa Becker, graduate student in human services, education and public policy, “Morning Stretch.”
