UD Library to mark Newark’s 250th anniversary March 31

1:30 p.m., March 19, 2008--The University of Delaware Library will hold a brown bag panel presentation and discussion, “It Takes a Village: The University of Delaware Library Celebrates the 250th Anniversary of Newark, Delaware,” from noon-1 p.m., Monday, March 31, in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room in the Morris Library.

Open to the public, the event is sponsored by the University of Delaware Library Assembly of Professional Staff (UDLAPS) and the Library Salaried Staff Council (LSSC).

The University of Delaware has had a significant impact on the town and the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library has strived to document Newark's evolution through collecting published sources, maps, ephemera, photographs, postcards and the papers of local families and businesses.

UD Library employees have made notable contributions to the celebration of Newark's anniversary, and four of them will discuss the different projects in which they took part.

L. Rebecca Johnson Melvin, associate librarian in the Special Collections Department, served as an editor on the recently released book, Histories of Newark: 1758-2008, a project sponsored by the office of the Mayor of Newark.

Theresa Hessey, library assistant in the Preservation Department, produced the book, Newark, for Arcadia Press's Images of America series.

Jaime Margalotti, assistant librarian in the Special Collections Department, served as co-curator, with Melvin, of the exhibition, “Little Known Histories of Newark, Delaware: 1758-2008,” which is open to the public through June 20, in the Special Collections Exhibition Gallery.

Asher Jackson, Pauline A. Young Resident Librarian, produced a video for the exhibition with the assistance of the Student Multimedia Design Center of the UD Library.
