Haven 'Marry-In' set Wednesday
2:51 p.m., April 14, 2008--Haven, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and allies student group at UD, will conduct a marry-in from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, on the patio outside the Trabant University Center.

The marry-in is an annual protest designed to raise awareness for equal marriage rights. Throughout the day, same-sex couples show their support in a brief “wedding” ceremony, where they exchange Hershey's kisses and rings with one another to demonstrate marriage equality.

Haven also will provide literature about marriage rights and statistics, as well as letters students can sign and send to political representatives to advocate for same-sex marriage.

“You don't have to be gay to participate in the marry-in,” says UD junior Karen Middlekauff, Haven's political chairperson in charge of the event. “It's a way for people to have fun while showing their support for equality.” Last year, nearly 250 couples were married at the event.

The marry-in will be followed by a wedding reception and dinner at 6:30 p.m. in Multipurpose Room C of the Trabant University Center. The reception will include wedding cake, a first dance and a round of the Newlywed Game to celebrate all newly married couples.
