University Archives to monitor PNPI compliance 11:46 a.m., Sept. 11, 2006--UD's office of Information Technologies (IT) launched a campaign in 2005 to educate campus departments on the need to protect sensitive personal nonpublic information (PNPI), such as Social Security and credit card numbers. “IT began this campaign because we were becoming aware of increasing incidents in higher education involving unprotected electronic information,” Leila Lyons, director, IT-User Services, said. “The PNPI campaign achieved our goal of educating the campus community about the critical need to protect this sensitive information,” she said. Many departments and offices have already deleted electronic information and shredded paper documents containing this type of information. Those offices that still store PNPI locally need to encrypt this information to be in compliance with the PNPI policy [www.udel.edu/ExecVP/polprod/1-22.html]. Because PNPI compliance is about properly protecting University information and records, as of fall 2006, PNPI compliance will be rolled over into the annual records management audit process conducted by University Archives. “PNPI compliance is critical to the institution's liabilities as well as protecting information assets of the University,” Jean Brown, director, University Archives, said. It remains the responsibility of unit heads to ensure that employees are in compliance with the “Information Security Policy” [www.udel.edu/ExecVP/polprod/1-15.html].
