Leadership lecture features Debra and Thomas Harvey

1:28 p.m., Oct. 10, 2006--The fall 2006 Chaplin Tyler Executive Leadership Lecture, sponsored by UD's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, will feature Debra Layton Harvey, a 1977 UD graduate, and E. Thomas Harvey III, a 1975 UD graduate, who will speak on “The Dynamics of a Successful Family Business,” at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, in 125 Alfred Lerner Hall. Those wishing to attend are asked to call the college's Graduate & Executive Programs office at (302) 831-2221 by Oct. 13.

Debra Layton Harvey

After teaching English at Milford High School and Padua Academy, Debra Harvey joined her husband, Thomas Harvey in the management of Harvey & Harvey, Home Waste and Confi-Shred. As vice president of sales and marketing, she also served on the chairman's council of the National Solid Waste Management Association.

In 1991, Debra assumed management responsibility for Harvey Truck Center, building the formerly failed Mack Truck and Mitsubishi Fuso truck dealership into an award-winning enterprise, whose annual gross revenues exceed $50 million.

She was recognized with the first-ever Mack Truck Symbol of Excellence award and has been a recipient every year. She also is a member of Mack Truck's Medallion Club for its top 20 dealers. In 2003, Debra was named Mack Truck Northeast Region Dealer of the Year, the first woman to receive this honor.

In 2003, she acquired a Volvo Truck franchise, and in 2006, she and her brother, Jeff Layton, founded Diamond State Truck Center, a parts and service dealership.

Interested in education, Debra has been active with both Tatnall School, where she served on the Board of Trustees, and Centreville School. She was a founder and is president of the board of trustees of Layton Preparatory School for children with learning differences, which is named in her honor.

E. Thomas Harvey III

A life-long Delaware resident, Thomas Harvey serves as president of Harvey, Hanna & Associates and also as president of Harvey Truck Center. He has owned and/or managed multiple waste management companies for the past 30 years, including Harvey & Harvey Inc., Home Waste Inc. and Confi-Shred, Inc. which collectively had annual gross revenues exceeding $50 million. Thomas merged the companies into USA Waste of Delaware, a subsidiary of USA Waste Services, and served as regional vice president. The company later merged with Waste Management, and Thomas serves as a consultant.

He now owns and operates a number of management and real estate property investment companies. His business interests also include Mack Truck, Volvo Truck and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck dealerships. A nationally recognized industry leader, Thomas has served on the board of governors of the Environmental Industries Association and the chairman's council of the National Solid Waste Management Association.

Thomas has served on several community and school boards, including the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics advisory board. He also sponsors and manages two basketball teams from Wilmington in the Sonny Hill Basketball league in Philadelphia.

The Harveys are parents of four children.

The executive leadership lecture series is supported by the Chaplin Tyler Endowment Fund and is dedicated to the memory of the late Chap and Elizabeth Tyler and their commitment to education and helping young people achieve success in the business world. The series brings leaders from business, government and nonprofit organizations to campus for a day to share their experiences and insights with the campus and business community and to engage in an open exchange of ideas and perspectives.

Chap Tyler received degrees from Northeastern University, Boston University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a fellow of the American Institute of Engineers, was a member of the Delaware's Higher Education Advisory Commission and technology consultant to President Harry Truman's Materials Policy Commission. In 1992, he was awarded the University of Delaware's Medal of Distinction, in 1993 was appointed a member of the Lerner College advisory board, and was recognized in 2003 as an Honorary “Lerner Fabulous 50” MBA alumnus. He is the author of Building for Success in Business: Your Mid-Career Years and The View from Age 100.
