UD seeks fifth straight CAA blood drive title
6:04 p.m., Oct. 17, 2006--The University of Delaware wants to make it five wins in a row during the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association “Have A Heart” Blood Challenge, on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) staffers will be processing potential donors and collecting units of blood from 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Trabant University Center. Since the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) initiated its “Have A Heart” Blood Challenge in 2002, UD has taken top honors each year for having the most potential donors volunteering to give to a great cause. Advance registration is preferred and can be arranged by calling 1-888-825-6638. Walk-in donors may be accommodated. Potential donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and have had no tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months. Campus sponsors of the “Have A Heart” Blood Challenge at UD include the Resident Student Association, HOLA and Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Post-blood-giving treats will include Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, compliments of UD Dining Services, and soft drinks by Cola-Cola. T-shirts for participants will be provided courtesy of BBD. YoUDee and members of the UD cheerleading and dance teams will appear throughout the day to provide entertainment and encouragement to donors and BBD staff members. The River (94.7 FM) will be giving away prizes during the blood drive.
“UD won the first four blood challenges, and we are delighted that our colleagues, especially our students, have shown their school spirit by participating in a competition that helps save lives,” Roselle said. “The CAA blood drive combines school spirit, fun and a sense of friendly competition, all to benefit persons in need in our communities, truly a win-win situation for everyone.” Last year throughout the CAA, the “Have A Heart” Blood Challenge attracted 3,559 attempted donors, while collecting 2,697 productive units of blood. The total units of blood collected represent a 28 percent increase over 2004 and an 132 percent increase from the inaugural blood challenge in 2002. During the 2005 Blood Challenge, UD made it four wins straight when a record 873 attempted donors turned out and 579 units of blood were collected. Drexel University earned a special commendation from the CAA by setting a Blood Challenge record with 605 units collected from 700 potential donors. Third place honors went to first-year CAA member Georgia State University, with 381 collected units of blood. All 12 CAA institutions had more than 100 prospective donors participate in the program. Additional units of blood collected from each school included Towson (263), William & Mary (181), UNC Wilmington (127), James Madison (114), George Mason (111), Hofstra (100) Old Dominion (83) Virginia Commonwealth (79) and Northeastern (74). It was at Roselle's suggestion that the leaders of CAA member institutions established the “Have A Heart” Blood Challenge as a fun way to emphasize the critical importance of donating blood. On each campus, member institutions promote the event and encourage student groups, faculty, staff and alumni to participate and support their school. In addition to the Nov. 15 blood drive at UD, other Blood Challenge schools and their dates are William & Mary (Sept. 19), Georgia State (Sept. 20), UNC Wilmington (Sept. 26), Virginia Commonwealth (Sept. 27), George Mason and James Madison (Oct. 18), Old Dominion (Oct. 26), Hofstra (Oct. 31), Drexel (Nov. 2), Northeastern (Nov. 8) and Towson (Nov. 20).
