Hunger and Homelessness Week events set March 5-9 5:02 p.m., March 2, 2007--Students in Smyth Residence Hall, a campus housing unit that emphasizes community involvement and volunteerism, are sponsoring Hunger and Homelessness Week from Monday, March 5-Friday, March 9. The inaugural event will offer members of the University community opportunities to help individuals less fortunate than themselves through volunteer activities and also will provide opportunities to learn about poverty and homelessness through lectures, films and educational events. A schedule for the week's events follows. From 6-8, Monday, March 5, at the Food Bank of Delaware, UD students, staff and faculty will have the opportunity to volunteer in ways that will benefit hungry Delawareans. At 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, in 100 Kirkbride Hall, the program “Faces of Homelessness” will give participants a chance to meet with fomerly homeless individuals and hear their stories. All day on Wednesday, March 7, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center, a simulated look at refugee life, “Camp Darfur,” will educate participants about the trials that thousands in Africa endure as displaced citizens of their homes and villages. At 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, in 120 Smith, a lecture, “Woman Under the Bridge,” will feature guest speaker Kirsten Harty of the Wilmington News Journal, a journalist who authored a series of articles on Delaware's homeless. From 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the Emmanuel Dining Room (located at 2nd and Jackson streets in Wilmington), members of UD's community will have the opportunity to volunteer to serve food to individuals in need. From 6-7:30 p.m., Friday, March 9, in the lounge of Smyth Hall, the Oxfam Hunger Banquet will give participants a different perspective on the types of meals that the majority of the world's population eats--when they are fortunate. At 7:30 and 10:30 p.m., Friday, March 9, in the Theatre of the Trabant University Center, The Pursuit of Happyness will be shown. The film stars Will Smith in an Oscar-nominated performance about a husband and father in search of financial security for his family. Admission is $3. The week's events are organized by the Smyth Residence Hall staff, the Office of Residence Life, Central Community Council, the UD chapter of Amnesty International, SCPAB and other UD student organizations.
