Faculty Senate votes to change department name

5:39 p.m., March 6, 2007--The University Faculty Senate voted unanimously March 5 to change a departmental name, terminate a master's degree in art and approve 32 proposed academic changes without challenge.

Senators approved a name change for the Department of Linguistics, making it the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science. The department already administers a master's degree in linguistics and cognitive science and is adding an undergraduate major in cognitive science.

Without discussion, the senate also disestablished the master of art program in the Department of Art. The master of fine art (MFA) is now accepted as the department's terminal graduate degree. The resolution noted that only eight students had been enrolled in the master of art program in the last nine years.

The 32 announcements for challenge that were passed unanimously included revisions of majors and the addition of courses in numerous fields. A request to remove the E110 waiver from the catalog was approved.

Among the items approved under the consent agenda were:

  • New concentrations in the history education major and the addition of a one-credit course; a “global history” concentration was changed to “world history”; a mathematics requirement was changed within biological sciences; an honors track for music majors was added and a minor in entrepreneurial studies was created within the Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems;
  • The English department added an undergraduate minor in journalism and made revisions to concentrations in creative writing, drama, film, ethnic and culture studies, literary studies, professional writing and the English minor;
  • The materials science department added a minor in nanoscale materials, and health, nutrition and exercise sciences revised three majors including a concentration in pediatrics;
  • Majors in psychology education and German education were revised; the Department of Political Science and International Relations established a new minor in Islamic studies, with and without a language requirement; fashion and apparel studies created a new certificate program; the College of Marine and Earth Studies created a new marine biosciences concentration; and a combined BA and MBA in music was established.
