About UD's 157th Commencement

4:30 p.m., May 27, 2006--On May 27 at Delaware Stadium, an estimated total of 5, 393 degrees will be conferred, including:

  • 245 doctoral degrees;
  • 775 master's degrees;
  • 4,250 bachelor's degrees; and
  • 123 associate's degrees.

Note: These figures include all degrees completed since Commencement last May.

Fun facts

Here are some facts about the University of Delaware's 157th Commencement:

  • Opening the ceremony is the alumni procession, which includes 79 representatives from the Classes of the 1930s through 2005, representing all segments of alumni living in 81 countries throughout the world. With the Class of 2006, the number of living UD alumni is in excess of 130,000;
  • Leading the alumni procession are this year's recipients of the Alumni Association's Warner and Taylor awards, which recognize the outstanding senior woman and man. These graduating seniors are Dalit Gulak and Thomas Isherwood;
  • Opening the ceremony is the presentation of the colors by members of the University of Delaware Air Force and Army ROTC. Lori Marateck, a member of the Class of 2006, will sing the National Anthem;
  • On the field are the flags of the 50 states and more than 130 countries that are home to our students, celebrating the role that UD benefactor P.S. du Pont played in establishing the University's Junior Year Abroad Program, the first program of its kind in the world. Delaware continues to rank among the top universities with study-abroad programs. Graduates who have participated in study abroad during their undergraduate studies will be asked to stand. They wear special sashes that feature the colors of the flags where they studied;
  • Graduates come from 44 states and 47 countries around the world;
  • Graduates range in age from 18 to 70, the oldest being Bonnie Dawson, who is receiving a master's degree in teaching English as a second language;
  • May 27 is the birthday for graduates Brian Tingle, Jennifer Cali, Corrine Chomiak, Karen McLaughlin, Alexandra Terrana, Shannon Justice and Jean Kennedy; and
  • The University of Delaware is celebrating its 263rd year of existence. The first class of 1743 included three signers of the Declaration of Independence among its 10 students.
