Presentations Rudi Matthee, professor of history, “Alcohol in Premodern Iran: Between Excess and Abstinence,” at conference on addiction in the early modern world, May 13, Huntington Library, Pasadena, Calif. Awards Deborah Bieler, assistant professor of English education, was one of three scholars awarded the National Council of Teachers of English Promising Researcher Award. The Council, with 60,000 individual and institutional members worldwide, is dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Heidi Kaufman, assistant professor of English, is one of 21 faculty members from colleges and universities worldwide selected to attend the third annual Summer Institute for Israel Studies at Brandeis University and in Israel.
