New worm targets Windows 2000 computers 1:32 p.m., Aug. 18, 2005--On Tuesday, Aug. 16, a new computer worm infected computers at a number of companies in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Affected computers repeatedly shut down and then restarted. While the worm primarily targeted computers running Windows 2000, some very early versions of Windows XP also were hit. Microsoft had issued a warning and a patch for the worm a week earlier. Information Technologies reminds the members of the University community of the importance of updating all computer operating systems regularly. Directions for updating are available for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Macintosh OS X systems at [www.udel.edu/security/]. Users should set their computers to check for critical updates and to download them automatically. Some operating systems will install the updates automatically, while others will notify the user that updates are ready to install. Following the advice on the UD Security page will save you from the headache of dealing with an infected system, as well as help protect the Universitys network from being compromised.
