IT to discontinue support for Windows 98/ME

3:50 p.m., May 26, 2005--McAfee plans to discontinue support of its anti-virus software for the Windows 98/ME operating systems as of June 30. Consequently, Information Technologies (IT) will discontinue support for these operating systems at UD on that date, according to Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services at UD.

IT recommends that computers running these operating systems be upgraded to Windows XP. A copy of XP Pro for an office computer can be purchased through UDMart. XP Pro for a personally owned computer can be purchased online from the University Bookstore for $79 at [www.tsc.udel.edu/microsoft].

According to Microsoft, a computer must meet the following system requirements in order to upgrade to Windows XP:

  • 300 megahertz (MHz), or higher, processor clock-speed Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family or compatible processor;
  • 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM;
  • 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space;
  • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor;
  • CD-ROM or DVD drive; and a
  • Keyboard and mouse (or compatible pointing device).

However, IT has found that these recommendations are the absolute minimum requirements to run XP, and most computers must exceed Microsoft’s recommendations to operate efficiently.

For more information about computer upgrades, call the Technology Solutions Center (TSC) at (302) 831-8895.

Those who purchase XP but are unsure how to install the software, should call the Help Center (302) 831-6000 for assistance.
