Wellness Center offers 5-for-5 Challenge 3:09 p.m., Sept. 14, 2005--According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 75 percent of Americans fail to eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Regular fruit and vegetable consumption is strongly associated with a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases. UDs Employee Wellness Center is promoting the benefits of eating produce with its 5-for-5 Challenge. Participants will be encouraged to consume a minimum of five total servings of fruits and vegetables per day over a five-day period and record their intake in a log. According to Marianne Carter, registered dietitian and Employee Wellness Center director, when individuals first hear this recommendation, many say they think it is a difficult goal to achieve. It's not as challenging as it sounds, and it's one of the most important things you can do to maintain good health, Carter said. This activity will show you how to meet this important recommendation." There are no classes to attend, and all participants will receive an informative packet with helpful tips and recipes. Those who successfully complete the challenge will be entered into a drawing to win 5-a-Day-The Better Health Cookbook or a fruit basket from Millburn Orchards. September has been designated National Five-a-Day Month to encourage the American public to consume five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day. The challenge begins on Monday, Sept. 26, and runs through Friday, Sept. 30. Cost to participate is 5 Wellness Dollars. To register, visit [www.udel.edu/wellness] or call (302) 831-8388 by Tuesday, Sept. 20. Article by Iesha Barnes, AS 06 To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
