Parents and Family Weekend set Oct. 21-23

4:02 p.m., Sept. 9, 2005--Each fall, UD’s Parents and Family Weekend gives students and families a chance to reunite on campus and share a slice of college life together. The event this year, scheduled for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 21-23, includes activities galore for all tastes and ages, ranging from ice skating and a ghost walk to athletic events and art exhibitions--with the centerpiece being Saturday’s gridiron contest between the Fightin’ Blue Hens and James Madison University.

Brochures, including ticket order forms, have been sent to all parents and families of undergraduate students. Tickets for special events during the weekend, as noted below, must be ordered by Wednesday, Oct. 12, to be processed and must be ordered using the ticket order form in the brochure. The order form also may be downloaded from the Parents and Family Weekend web site at [www.udel.edu/parents] by clicking on the Parents and Family Weekend link. Here’s a rundown on this year’s schedule of events.

Friday, Oct. 21:

  • “Abstract and All That: Selected works from the Paul Jones Collection,” 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Mechanical Hall Galleries;
  • “Quilt Voices: Contemporary Approaches to a Traditional Form”, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Old College Gallery;
  • Dinner at the Blue & Gold Club, seating at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., call (302) 831-2582 for information and to make prepaid reservations;
  • “Ghosts (and History) on The Green,” walking tour at 8 p.m., Old College, free admission but tickets are required, see ticket order form;
  • Field hockey game, UD vs. Towson University, 7 p.m., Fred Rullo Stadium, $4 for adults, $2 for children under 14, free for UD students;
  • Men’s Soccer game, UD vs. George Mason University, 7 p.m., Delaware Mini-stadium, free;
  • Women’s Volleyball game, UD vs. Virginia Commonwealth University, 7 p.m., Barbara Viera Court, Carpenter Sports Building, $4 for adults, $2 for children under 14, free for UD students;
  • Ice skating, 8-10 p.m., Fred Rust Ice Arena, $6 for adults, $5 for children 6 and under. Skate rental $3;
  • Women’s Ice Hockey, 8 p.m., Gold Ice Arena, free; and
  • Delaware Symphony orchestra, Discover Delaware Series, Rachel Lee, violin, 8 p.m., Mitchell Hall, $30 for general public, $10 for UD students with IDs, call (302) 652-5577. Tickets available at 7 p.m. at the door.

Saturday, Oct. 22:

  • “Quilt Voices: Contemporary Approaches to a Traditional Form,” 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Old College Gallery;
  • Pregame Tailgate Brunch, 10 a.m.-noon, practice field behind Delaware Field House, $18 adults, $8 for children under 8, see ticket order form;
  • Football game, UD vs. James Madison University, noon kickoff, Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium, $18 for reserved seats; students free in South End Zone only, see ticket order form;
  • Women’s Volley game, UD vs. College of William and Mary, 7 p.m., Barbara Viera Court, Carpenter Sports Building, $4 for adults, $2 for children under 14, free for students with UD ID;
  • Ice skating, 8-10 p.m., Fred Rust Ice Arena, $6 or adults, $5 for children 6 and under, free for students with UD ID; skate rental $3; and
  • Calliope X, featuring more than 400 student musicians, UD’s jazz bands, wind and symphonic bands and finale by Fightin’ Blue Hens Marching Band, 8 p.m., Bob Carpenter Center, reserved seating, $15 per person (benefits music scholarships), see ticket order form.

Sunday, Oct. 23:

  • Brunch at the Blue & Gold Club, 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.;

  • Brunch University Style, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Pencader, Rodney and Russell dining halls, $7.20 per person, except for UD students using meal plan, see ticket order form;

  • “Quilt Voices: Contemporary Approaches to a Traditional From, 1 p.m.-4 p.m., Old College Gallery;

  • Men’s soccer game, UD vs. Towson University, 1 p.m., Delaware Mini-Stadium; and
  • Ice skating, 1-3 p.m., Fred Rust Ice Arena, $6 adults, $5 for children under 6, free to students with UD ID, $3 skate rental.

Around Campus

In addition, the University of Delaware Mineralogical Museum in Penny Hall will be open 1-4 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Admission information sessions and campus tours will be available at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., Friday; and 10 a.m. and noon, Saturday. For reservations call (302) 831-2341.

The UD Campus Shop in the Trabant University Center will be open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday; and noon-6 p.m., Sunday.

The University Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, and noon-4 p.m., Saturday. The Student Services Building will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday.
