Employees team up for spring walk

3:42 p.m., March 16, 2005--CHEPS Ahoy, Med Treks and the PT Cruisers--these are just a few of the nearly 25 employee teams registered for the Employee Wellness Center's spring walking program, "Ship to Shore.”

The eight-week walking program, set for April 3-May 28, is one of the center's most popular programs.

"Walking is an activity that most people can conveniently incorporate into their daily schedules,” Marianne Carter, director of the Employee Wellness Center, said. "A lifestyle that includes physical activity, such as walking, is a key ingredient in maintaining good health," she said.

This year's team option is a new feature of the walking program. "Every year we attempt to retool our fitness programs to keep them fresh and interesting," Linda Smith, program coordinator, said.

Smith consulted with other worksite health promoters nationwide in adapting the team concept for U.D. employees. Many walkers successfully recruited teammates from among their previously sedentary coworkers. "When coworkers support each other in their commitment to be physically active, everyone wins,” Smith said.

Program cost is 15 Wellness Dollars.

Employees can register as individuals or as part of five-person teams until Thursday, March 17. Visit [www.udel.edu/wellness] or call the Employee Wellness Center at (302) 831-8388 to register.
