4:55 p.m., June 13, 2005--Team spirit, friendly competition and imagination all contributed to make the recent Ship to Shore UD employee walking program a big success.

Launched April 3, the eight-week program encouraged employee units from across campus to form five-member teams, slug them with catchy titles, and walk an imaginary course stretching from the Port of Wilmington to Fenwick Island.

By the end of the first week, individual members of the 34 teams had logged 25 to 75 miles apiece, and humorous team names like “Sole Mates” and “Step Sisters” were inspiring light-hearted competition across campus.

"We were excited to see the number of teams that signed up,” Marianne Carter, Employee Wellness director, said. “It was also fun to see the clever names they gave themselves.”

According to Linda Smith, Employee Wellness program coordinator, the number of participants was double what was originally projected back in February, when the program was initially publicized, and weekly inspirational e-mails kept interest and motivation high. “We found that if participants got weekly e-mails with Delaware trivia, it added to the fun,” she said.

Although all teams reaped big rewards by the program’s conclusion on May 28, the team grand prize winner was Med Treks (Medical Technology), captained by Diane Klonowski, administrative assistant, and filled out by members Leslie Allshouse, instructor; Anna Ciulla, chairperson of Medical Technology; Paula Melancon, laboratory coordinator; and Xiaoming Zhang, research specialist. Each member will receive a $50 gift certificate to Save On Sneaks and a boxed lunch courtesy of Dining Services.

The individual grand prize went to Rosemarie Swaye, library coordinator, who won a weekend’s stay at UD’s Virden Center in Lewes, courtesy of Conference Services.

Both drawings were randomly chosen from a list of participants who met the program criteria by logging their weekly goals and turning in their points on time.
