American Red Cross urges preparedness after London bombings

6:34 p.m., July 7, 2005--After the July 7 bombings in London and the increase in America’s threat level to “High/Orange” for those who travel by subway, inner-city bus and passenger rail, the American Red Cross is urging families and individuals across the nation to take precautions, be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activities to their local law enforcement.

In a statement issued July 7, the Red Cross advises, “If you see any bags or packages left unattended, specifically in or around transit locations, please inform authorities. Information about recommended preparations for this change in threat level is available at [www.redcrossdelmarva.org].”

The Red Cross also released a summary of recommended preparedness measures for commuters as well as actions for “Orange” and lower levels. The commuter safety tips include:

  • Become familiar with the emergency procedures for your local transit system.
  • Learn and practice alternate routes to where you may need to go.
  • Take special note of the emergency exits at the stations you use.
  • Carry flashlight, dust mask and protective gloves with you.
  • Keep a local map with you in case you need to walk or find alternate transportation.
  • Update your family disaster plan to include your regular commuting routes.
  • Some cellular phones will not work in underground subway systems, so locate the nearest pay phones and carry coins.

To download the full versions of the Red Cross recommendations for the Homeland Security Advisory System, visit [www.redcross.org], for a wide variety of free publications in a variety of languages designed to help citizens prepare for terrorism and natural disasters.

The Red Cross advises that inquiries regarding American citizens who may have been in the United Kingdom at the time of the July 7 incidents should be directed to the United States Department of State Office of Overseas Citizen Services at 1-888-407-4747.
