Students to be remembered on National Day of Prayer

3:58 p.m., May 4, 2005--Three recently deceased students, sophomore Lindsey Bonistall, freshman Zenit Soto and freshman Rachel Payne, will be remembered during prayers to mark the National Day of Prayer from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 5, on the patio outside Trabant University Center.

The prayer event is organized by several student groups, including Warriors for Christ Campus Ministry, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Campus Crusade for Christ, Word of Life Campus Ministry, Baptist Student Ministry, Vision and UD’s Gospel Choir.

"As we gather to join the rest of the nation in prayer, we would like to remember those three members of our community whose sudden departures have left us with great pain and grief that prayers can ease,” senior Naomi Bristol, one of the organizers, said. “We hope their families will find comfort in knowing that the University community shares their loss."

The National Day of Prayer tradition began in 1775, when the Continental Congress issued a proclamation setting aside a day of prayer. Congress established an annual day of prayer in 1952, and the law was amended in 1988 to designate the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer.
