Films, lectures celebrate World Year of Physics

4:56 p.m., April 6, 2005--Films, a lecture, an open house and poster presentation will mark World Year of Physics celebration at UD in a spring series sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

A list of the events follows.

Einstein Revealed, 7 p.m., Friday, April 8, 131 Sharp Lab--This film will take viewers on a journey into the mind of a genius with computer animations that attempt to recreate the great physicist’s meditations on light, time and space.

Tesla, Master of Lighting, 7 p.m., Friday, April 15, 131 Sharp Lab--This film documents Tesla’s life and inventions by drawing heavily on his autobiographical and scientific writings, as well as rare photographs.

Magnetic Storms, 7 p.m., Friday, April 22, 206 Kirkbride Hall--This movie delves into the phenomenon of solar flares and concentrates on the massive blackout that one caused across Canada and the Northeastern United States in March 1989.

High School Day/Open House , 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, April 23, Sharp Lab--This all-day event, which is free and open to the public, is designed to give prospective students an overview of the programs offered by the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Lecture to celebrate World Year of Physics and Math Awareness Month , 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 131 Sharp Lab--"This Small World the Great," a lecture cosponsored by UD’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and Department of Mathematical Sciences, will feature guest speaker E.N. Economou, a scholar from the Research Center of Crete, Greece. Light refreshments will be served after the lecture.

The Elegant Universe, 5 p.m., Friday, April 29, 131 Sharp Lab--This movie explores physicist Bryan Greene’s lucid explanation of string theory--the idea that all matter in the universe is comprised of complex, tiny vibrating strings.

Department of Physics and Astronomy Poster Presentation , 1-5 p.m., Friday, June 3, Sharp Lab--This event will entail a judging of poster presentations created by students in UD’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. The contest will be coordinated by Marianna Safronova, assistant professor of physics and astronomy. Judges will include UD faculty and students. After the judging, prizes will be awarded for best poster.
