Fall employee physical activity challenge

4:41 p.m., Sept. 1, 2005--No time to exercise? UD’s Employee Wellness Center can demonstrate how to meet recommended guidelines without having to set aside 30-60 consecutive minutes a day for physical activity.

The eight-week program “Minutes in Motion...On the Go!” runs from Sept. 26 to Nov. 20. Participants record how many minutes per day they spend during the fall doing physical activity. Many activities can count, such as walking, bicycling and raking leaves.

“We're hoping that a large number of employees and retirees participate in this program,” Marianne Carter, Employee Wellness Center director, said. “With our hectic lifestyles, it is often challenging to set aside blocks of time for physical activity. Combining shorter bouts of activity throughout the day can still help employees feel great and improve their health.”

The flexible program promotes the accumulation of physical activity throughout the day.

“Employees are often overwhelmed when they hear the guideline to engage in 30-60 minutes of physical activity five or more days per week,” Linda Smith, program coordinator, said. “We're trying to spread the message that this time can be split up. A 10-minute walk at lunch and a 20-minute bike ride in the evening can get you to your goal.”

Participants will have access to a log to keep track of their “minutes in
Motion.” A new feature this year is the availability of an online log.

The challenge will award prizes, including a tote bag for all finishers, and a grand prize drawing for a $300 travel voucher from UNIGLOBE Charlie B. and Red Carpet Travels.

Employees and retirees can pay spend their Wellness Dollars to register. The cost is 15 Wellness Dollars, and registration for the program will go until Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Register online at [www.udel.edu/wellness] or call (302) 831-8388 to request an activity log through campus mail. The first 100 employees who register before Friday, Sept. 9, will receive the early bird prize, a handy Employee Wellness Center keychain flashlight.
