Corporate governance panel discussions set 9:21 a.m., Oct. 14, 2005--The nation’s leading corporate governance experts, including corporate directors, shareholder advocates, educators, journalists, lawyers and jurists, will visit the University of Delaware this fall to discuss key issues in the field as part of a series sponsored by the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance. The series will feature panel discussions Tuesday, Oct. 18, Thursday, Nov. 3, and Thursday, Nov. 10, according to Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and center director. The series is held in conjunction with an Elson course on corporate governance in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. "The series has been very well received, both by corporate governance experts and also by the students, faculty and interested members of the community who attend," Elson said. Corporate governance guidelines will be the topic of discussion on Oct. 18. Panelists scheduled to attend are Francis Byrd, vice president and senior analyst of Moody's Investors Service; Justice Jack Jacobs of the Delaware Supreme Court; Jack Krol, former chairman of the board of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co.; Robert Lonergan, vice president and general counsel of Rohm & Haas; James Melican, president of Proxy Governance, Inc.; Nils Okeson, partner with the law firm of Alston & Bird; Greg Taxin, chief executive officer of Glass Lewis and Co.; Michael Useem, William and Jacalyn Egan Professor of Management in the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania; and Luigi Zingales, Robert C. McCormack Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. Shareholder access to the company proxy will be discussed on Nov. 3. Panelists will be John Castellani, president of the Business Roundtable; Rosemary Kenney, director of corporate governance of Pfizer, Inc.; A. Gilchrist Sparks, a partner with the law firm of Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell; Chief Justice Myron Steele of the Delaware Supreme Court; Rick Ferlauto, director of pensions and benefits policy with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME); and Linda Scott, director of corporate governance with the TIAA-CREF financial services organization, one of the nation’s largest institutional investors. The impact of increased director liability will be the topic on Nov. 10. Panelists will be Chancellor William Chandler of the Delaware Court of Chancery; John “Sean” Coffey, partner with Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann; Gregory Doody, executive vice president and general counsel of HealthSouth Corp.; Michael Klausner, Nancy and Charles Munger Professor of Business and Professor of Law, and associate dean for research and academics at the Stanford Law School; Ed Labaton, partner with Goodkind Labaton Rudoff & Sucharow; Jerry Levin, former chairman and chief executive officer of Sunbeam Corp. and director of Ecolab Inc. and U.S. Bancorp; John Olson, partner with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Roger Raber, president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Corporate Directors; Robert Rock, chairman and publisher of the magazine Directors & Boards; E. Norman Veasey, former chief justice of the Delaware Supreme Court; and Ann Yerger, executive director of the Council of Institutional Investors.
