Osteoporosis screening and lecture

1:08 p.m., April 19, 2005--UD’s Employee Wellness Center is offering screening for osteoporosis, and a noon lecture on preventing osteoporosis, “Strength Training for Strong Bones.”

The osteoporosis screening will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, in 219 Trabant University Center. Christiana Care Imaging Services will perform an ultrasound of the heel bones of those screened to estimate bone density. The five-minute procedure provides immediate results and can determine whether further testing is recommended.

The screening costs 10 Wellness Dollars and is available only to employees and retirees who are over the age of 40, have not been screened for bone density in the past two years and are not being treated by a doctor for osteoporosis or bone loss.

Call (302) 831-8388 to schedule an appointment.

The lecture on bone-building exercises to prevent osteoporosis, “Strength Training for Strong Bones,” will be held from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, in 203 Robinson Hall. The cost is 10 Wellness Dollars. To make a reservation for the lecture, go to [www.udel.edu/wellness].

Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by thinning bones, has been described as a “silent epidemic.” According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 34 million Americans have low bone density, and another 10 million have been diagnosed with the condition.

A reminder--Wellness Dollars for the 2004-05 fiscal year must be used by June 15. On July 1, fulltime employees and retirees will receive 50 new Wellness Dollars for 2005-06.
