Search for Marine Studies dean under way

2:08 p.m., Aug. 5, 2005--A search for a new dean of UD’s College of Marine Studies is currently under way. This is an internal search restricted to current employees of the University of Delaware with proven leadership and management skills.

The College of Marine Studies dean reports directly to the provost and plays a key role in the life of the University, providing academic leadership to 37 faculty in a unit whose overall budget exceeds $16 million. The chosen candidate will serve as part of the central administrative team and will participate actively in University development activities.

Currently a graduate-only interdisciplinary college, the College of Marine Studies is committed to developing skilled academic and professional leaders in marine policy, oceanography, physical ocean science and engineering, and marine biology and biochemistry. Pending final reviews and approvals, the college will merge with the Department of Geology (currently in the College of Arts and Sciences), a shift that would add graduate and undergraduate degrees in geology and earth science education, as well as significant involvement with UD’s undergraduate environmental science degree program.

The successful candidate should possess an outstanding academic record and the ability to provide the leadership necessary to guide the college through the upcoming transitions. Experience in recruiting and retaining faculty and managing a complex academic project are desired, as are the abilities to foster vigorous research and graduate education programs across a breadth of academic disciplines. Experience with community outreach efforts and a commitment to fostering a climate of multicultural diversity are also strongly sought-after characteristics.

The search committee is chaired by Eric W. Kaler, dean of the College of Engineering, and includes Janice A. Seitz, associate dean of UD’s Cooperative Extension Service; Mohsen Badiey, professor of marine studies; Biliana Cicin-Sain, professor of marine studies; George W. Luther, Maxwell P. and Mildred H. Harrington Professor of Marine Studies; James E. Pizzuto, chairperson of the Department of Geology; and John Gallagher, professor of marine studies.

Review of applications will begin Monday, Aug. 22, and nominations and applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.

Candidates should submit a detailed resume, a letter of interest outlining a vision for growth and development of the College of Marine Studies, and a list with names and addresses of four references to Dean Eric W. Kaler, Chairperson, Marine Studies Search Committee, 102 Du Pont Hall, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.

Nominations and expressions of interest will be held in confidence. For more information on the College of Marine Studies, visit [www.ocean.udel.edu/]. The University of Delaware is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Applications from minority group members and women are encouraged.
