Martial arts maestros at UD April 25

11:44 a.m., April 14, 2005--Men Hui Feng, one of the top 10 martial arts professors in China, will give a lecture and demonstration at 6 p.m., Monday, April 25, in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The event is free and open to the pubic.

Feng serves as vice president of the National Chinese Wushu (martial arts) Association, and has been a professor of Chinese Martial Arts at Beijing Sports University for more than 40 years. The author of many martial arts textbooks that serve as the foundation for the training and instruction of students at all major Chinese universities, Feng lectures and teaches around the world.

Feng will be accompanied by his wife, Kan Gui Xiang, an expert in the Chen Style of Tai Chi and a professor who is credited with creating the “42” international competition sword form and the open-handed “56” Chen Style competition style. The visiting professors also created Dong Yue Tai Ji Quan, or Eastern Mountain Tai Chi Quan, to help celebrate the start of the new millennium in China.

The couple has trained many champions in worldwide martial arts competition and movie star Jet Lee.

During their stay at UD, Feng and Xiang will be teaching volunteers who will be performing martial arts exhibitions at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The event is hosted at UD by David Barlow, associate professor, and Kevin Sun, supplemental faculty, both of health and exercise sciences.

For more information, call Sun at (302) 373-2918, e-mail [zksun@udel.edu], or call Barlow at (302) 831-3030 or e-mail [barlow@udel.edu].
