Service-Learning Scholars Forum, Aug. 11

3:55 p.m., Aug. 8, 2005--The University community is invited to hear about the experiences of UD’s Office of Service Learning’s (OSL) first scholarship students who spent the summer working with community organizations under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Students will report on their experiences at the Service-Learning Scholars Forum, from 10 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, in the Collins Room of the Perkins Student Center. Faculty, students and members of the community will learn firsthand the impact service-based coursework has had on their peers.

Service-learning scholars complete a 10-week summer course in a setting outside the classroom. They work for a community nonprofit or governmental agency, do community-based action research or perform a service-based corporate activity and engage in academic pursuits under the guidance of a UD faculty mentor. Students spend the bulk of their week working in the community and one-quarter of their time in academic reading, discussion and reflection.

The eight scholarship students will give the following 10- to 12-minute talks:

  • “Nutrition Education Programs in Delaware” by Allison Behrle, senior, nutritional sciences, 10:05 a.m.;
  • “New Art to Newark: Restoring Community through Creation” by Erin Carver, junior, fine arts, 10:20 a.m.;
  • “Pilot Program in Photography” by Keith Modzelewski, senior, fine arts, 10:35 a.m.;
  • “Website Development for the Newark Black Family Reunion/Art as Social Activism” by Andrew Waltz, senior, art, 10:50 a.m.;
  • “Service-Learning Project in Business and Technical Writing for Camp Lenape” by Karen Shore, senior, English, 11:15 a.m.;
  • “Bringing Hispanic Music into the Music Curriculum” by Emily Paolini, senior, music education, 11:30 a.m.;
  • “En La Union Esta La Fuerza-In Unity is Strength: Coalition Building between the African-American & Latino Communities and the Role of the Nonprofit Sector” by Craig Aleman, senior, political science, 11:45 a.m.; and
  • “Mediating Cultural Conflict between Adolescent Girls at the Latin American Community Center” by Amy Spencer, junior, elementary education, noon.
