Talk on improving math teaching set for Lewes, Milford

9:23 a.m., March 18, 2005--James Hiebert, UD’s Barkley Professor of Education, will discuss distinctive features of classroom teaching that help to explain students’ achievement in mathematics at presentations Friday, March 25, in Lewes and Milford.

The lecture, “Improving Mathematics Teaching in U.S. Schools: What We Can Learn From International Comparisons,” will conclude the Land and Sea Lecture Series, a month-long program featuring talks by members of the University of Delaware faculty held each Friday in March at 10 a.m. in UD’s Virden Center in Lewes and again at 1:30 p.m. in the Milford Public Library.

Now in its 20th year, the series, which is sponsored by the Office of Alumni and University Relations, features four lectures on topics ranging from global media and the power of images to the juvenile death penalty.

“This lecture series exposes people in Southern Delaware to the quality of our faculty and the value of the research they are doing,” Gary Simpson, assistant director of alumni and University relations, said. “This is a great opportunity for the University as well because it gives our faculty the opportunity to interact with members of the southern Delaware community in a one-on-one exchange of ideas.”

The lectures are being held at the Milford Public Library for the first time, providing an opportunity for Milford residents to join the discussions in a convenient public facility.

“The Milford Public Library is very excited to be the host for the UD Lecture Series,” Kay Hudson, library director, said. “This is a great opportunity for residents of Milford and surrounding areas to participate in the lecture series. We have a wonderful facility and are proud to be able to share it with the UD.”

Hiebert’s lecture will be offered at 10 a.m. at the Virden Center at the Hugh R. Sharp campus, 700 Pilottown Rd., Lewes; and again at 1:30 p.m. in the public meeting room of the Milford Public Library, 11 SE Front St., Milford.
