‘Pitch-in for Katrina’ fund-raiser set Sunday

5:06 p.m., Oct. 20, 2005--UD’s Panhellenic Conference and the Interfraternity Council are hosting a Greek softball tournament to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina from 12-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 23, at Handloff Field (between the Rodney and Dickinson residence hall complexes). Nine sororities and several fraternities are paired up to play in the tournament.

Members of the UD and the Newark communities are invited to watch the softball tournament. Admission is free, but donations will be collected throughout the afternoon for victims of Hurricane Katrina. A raffle will be held for gift certificates to Cucina di Napoli and Newark Deli and Bagel.

Newark Mayor Vance Funk is scheduled to appear at the event.

Sorority and fraternity members involved in the tournament have purchased T-shirts for $10 a piece to help support the event. Alpha Epsilon Phi and Phi Sigma Sigma both had 100 percent of their members buy T-shirts, and a donation is being made on their behalf to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Katrina Fund.

Community sponsors of the event include Cucina di Napoli, Grotto Pizza, Newark Deli and Bagel and Streamlight Inc.
