Still time to join Sept. 11 Heart Walk Cardiovascular diseases are Americas number-one killer of both men and women and AHA is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Approximately one million Americans die from cardiovascular disease annually. Cardiovascular disease causes an average of one death every 34 seconds. If youre female, you've got more than a 50 percent chance of dying from heart or blood-vessel problems. In fact, nearly twice as many women die from heart disease as from all forms of cancer. About 1 million Americans alive today have congenital heart defects, approximately 25 percent of these are children. Heart defects are the most common birth defect and the number one killer of infants from birth defects. Research funded by AHA has led to major advances such as CPR, cholesterol-lowering drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery and clot-busting drugs. The AHA was responsible for placing automated external defibrillators with all first responders in Delaware, and AHA was a major player in the Clean Indoor Air law and Smoke Free Delaware. On its web site [www.americanheart.org], AHA sponsors several on-line educational programs for the public, including Choose to Move and Cholesterol Low Down. Before the Heart Walk, walkers collect pledges for AHA. Then, on the day of the walk, UD team captains collect pledge envelopes and turn them into the registration table leaving walkers to enjoy the music, food, health information, YoUDee and Baby Blue and collect prizes based on how much money they raise.
