Hearing March 16 on new Ph.D. program 11:21 a.m., March 10, 2005--The Faculty Senate Coordinating Committee on Education and the Graduate Studies Committee will hold a hearing on the establishment of a new doctoral program in preservation studies from 35 p.m., Wednesday, March 16, in 116 Gore Hall. The hearing is open to all members of the University community. The proposed Preservation Studies Program is an interdisciplinary doctoral course of study that will teach the philosophies, research methodologies and policies of the preservation of art, architecture, landscapes and material culture. It is distinct from other courses of graduate study in that it provides a mechanism for an interdisciplinary approach to doctoral study in preservation. Students will study individual objects and works of art, collections, buildings and structures and sites and landscapes, assessing the significance and cultural contexts for all aspects of visual and material culture. The new doctoral program would be administered by the Center for Material Culture Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences and may involve collaboration with faculty and physical resources in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering, Human Services, Education and Public Policy and Marine Studies, as well as the Winterthur Museum.
