Giving on The Green set Sept. 16

3:43 p.m., Sept. 13, 2005--The offices of Campus Life, Residence Life and other campus offices are offering members of the University community three ways to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Giving on The Green, set for 3-5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 16, on the North Green, will raise funds and inspire friendly competition among Registered Student Organizations, residential complexes and fraternities and sororities. In the event of rain, Giving on The Green will move to the Food Court in the Trabant University Center.

Participating organizations will be assigned a table and a bucket for collecting donations on The Green. The organization that raises the most money at the end of the event will win a pizza party, donated by ARAMARK, and be recognized on UDaily and in The Review.

A weeklong raffle ticket sale, which will culminate with a raffle at Giving on The Green, is being held through Sept. 16. Tickets, which are $1 each, are being sold at all residence halls and at the Office of Residence Life on Courtney Street.

The raffle drawing will be held at 5 p.m., Sept. 16, on the North Green, and will offer such items as an overnight package at the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel, a six-foot hoagie from UD Dining Services, a pizza party from UD Dining Services, a dinner for two at the Blue & Gold Club, a premium meal of choice at the Pencader Dining Hall, UD Bookstore merchandise, software from Journey Ed, a gift basket from Wissahickon/Blue Hen Spring Water, a cooler and products from Coca-Cola and a gift basket from ARAMARK.

The Ribbon Garden, which will be established on the south side of Memorial Hall, will open with the first planting of ribbons at the Giving on The Green event on Sept. 16, and will remain open for plantings through Friday, Sept. 23.

Green ribbons are being distributed by Residence Life staff to students and community members throughout this week, and recipients are asked to write messages on them to survivors of the hurricane, and then bring them to the initial planting.

Ribbons also will be distributed at the Giving on The Green event and at events during Freshman Family Weekend and Newark Community Day, Sunday, Sept. 18. Ribbons collected at weekend events will be added to the garden as well. Ribbons will be added to the garden throughout the week of Sept. 19. The goal is to create a community project that shows solidarity and encourages reflection and awareness of those in need.
