Business plan final presentations set April 29

2:54 p.m., April 12, 2005--Four individual UD student entrepreneurs and one team of two will pitch their business ventures and compete for the top three cash prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500, in an afternoon presentation, set for 1:45 p.m., Friday, April 29, in 231 Alfred Lerner Hall.

The annual competition, which is organized by Scott Jones, UD professor of accounting, was created by UD’s Lerner College of Business and Economics to encourage students to find new venture ideas and build successful businesses. It also, Jones said, is open to UD students from every discipline, and is intended to provide education and networking opportunities for young entrepreneurs who wish to launch fledgling business ventures.

“Even though the Lerner College of Business and Economics hosts this competition, you’ll notice that this year’s finalists are from many different majors,” Jones said.

Finalists in the this year’s contest are Ryan Bonifacino, a senior marketing major from Newark; Eric Ziegenfuss, a junior agricultural management major from Bangor, Pa.; Friciveri Carias, a senior hotel and restaurant management major from Lakewood, Calif.; David Egosi, a senior marketing major from Dix Hill, N.Y.; and collaborative team members Yujuan Liu of from Hebei, China, and and Vahik Krikorian, of Newark, both doctoral candidates in materials science.

During their 15-minute presentations, each contestant (or team) will establish why their product or service is the best in an effort to “sell” their venture to members of the audience.

The lineup of this year’s ventures includes Bonifacino’s Yakka Studios, a photography studio; Ziegenfuss’ Mushroom Palace, a niche cuisine restaurant; Carias’ Club Salinatas Inn, a resort; Egosi’s College Fashions, a web-based apparel franchise; and Liu and Krikorian’s PA-IR Vision, a high-tech infrared spectroscopy instrument.

The April 29 event is free and open to members of the University community, but registration is required by Monday, April 25. For more information and to register, go to [www.lerner.udel.edu/bpc/].
