Quilt research seminar set Nov. 5

4:10 p.m., Oct. 26, 2005--An afternoon seminar on the history and making of quilts is set for 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, in 101 Recitation Hall.

Cosponsored by UD’s Center for Material Culture Studies and the Alliance for American Quilts, the seminar is designed to complement the “Quilt Voices” exhibition now on display at Old College and will include presentations and quilting demonstrations.

One of the presenters, Shelly Zegart, president and cofounder of the Alliance for American Quilts, will talk about the organization’s several quilt research projects, including the “Quilter’s Save Our Stories” project, a grassroots venture that gives quilters a venue to tell their stories.

After Zegart’s talk, participants will have an opportunity to listen to an interview for the Save Our Stories project with contemporary quilt artist Marilyn Henrion and Amy Henderson, UD art history doctoral candidate and alliance board member.

The second half of the afternoon will feature two presentations on Lancaster County, Pa., quilts by Patricia Keller, UD history of American civilization doctoral candidate and alliance board member, and Janneken Smucker, UD art history doctoral candidate and alliance board member.

A reception and opportunity to view the “Quilt Voices” exhibition will cap the afternoon.

Both the seminar and the exhibition are free, but participants should register by Friday, Oct. 28, by e-mailing [alliancequilts@yahoo.com] or by calling (302) 831-8037.
