African Consciousness Celebration continues

12:24 p.m., April 4, 2005--The Center for Black Culture’s African Consciousness Celebration 2005 continues with “Lest We Forget: Black Students at the University of Delaware Since the 1960s,” at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 7, in Multipurpose Room B in the Trabant University Center.

Originally scheduled for Feb. 24, the event, which is part of the Center for Black Culture’s “Lest You Forget: The History, Struggles and Triumphs of Black America” African Consciousness Celebration for spring semester was postponed due to inclement weather.

The session features a panel discussion by successive generations of black students at UD since the 1960s. It begins with the reminiscences of representatives of the ’60s generation who pressed for the establishment of a Black Student Union, a Center for Black Culture and a Black American Studies Program. The discussion will provide participants with an opportunity to assess continuities and changes in the student experience on this campus.

Additional events in the series include:

Annual Richard Wilson Step Show, at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 9, in the Bob Carpenter Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Advance ticket prices are $12 for the public, $10 for UD students, faculty, staff, seniors 62 years and older and children under 12 years. At the door ticket prices are $15 for the public and $12 for UD students, faculty, staff, seniors (62 years and above) and children under 12 years. An “After Party” is planned for 10 p.m.-3 a.m. in the Carpenter Sports Building. Combo tickets (step show and party) are $14, and are limited to students with UD IDs. Sales end Friday, April 8.

“Diversity as Art: Art as Diversity, An Evening with Nikki Giovanni,” will begin at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, in the Multipurpose Room of the Trabant University Center. The event is free and open to the public. Giovanni, a self-proclaimed “Black American, daughter, mother and professor of English,” has been a celebrated and controversial poet for more than 25 years. A professor of poetry, writing and literature at Virginia Polytech University, Giovanni speaks with humor about the creativity in everyday activities.
