Oral Communication Fellows program launched

12:11 p.m., May 16, 2005--Twenty communication majors are training to help undergraduates from all majors who want to improve their oral presentations.

Beginning next fall, the Oral Communication Fellows will address speech formats, using visual aids, Power Point presentation skills and speaker apprehension. The fellows’ training is funded by a Center for Teaching Effectiveness grant.

Students chosen as Oral Communication Fellows have completed a public speaking class and maintained a high grade point average. They are now enrolled in a course designed to teach mentoring skills.

Jo Kmetz, an instructor in the Department of Communication and director of the fellows program, said future students who meet the requirements, show high levels of motivation and enthusiasm and have the ability to critique others with honesty and tact will be invited to become fellows.

Kmetz said the program will reach out to students who are uncomfortable with public speaking and help build confidence through skill-building. She said students often are more comfortable being coached by their peers.

Kmetz also said the program will make faculty more aware of students’ presentation skills, which can be taken into account when grading presentations.
