Couturier to talk fashion Oct. 20

Illustration of a dress designed by Charles Kleibacker by Charles Stipleman of the Fashion Institute of Technology
2:49 p.m., Oct. 11, 2005--Charles Kleibacker, an American couturier known as the "Master of the Bias Cut" will present "Dress: As History, As Engineering, As Art..." from 7-8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Among Kleibacker's signature techniques are the creation of thin, strong bias-cut spaghetti straps and the painstaking easing and right-side basting required to shape a bodice to the figure with absolutely no gaping.

Kleibacker owned his own design studio for 26 years, specializing in garments cut to flatter the figure. His dedication to the fit and construction of fine garments brought him many assignments as consultant and designer-in-residence to colleges and universities across the country. Currently, he is serving as adjunct faculty of the Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Kent State University and adjunct curator of the Columbus Museum of Art.

Kleibacker’s visit to UD is cosponsored by the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, the Department of Art Conservation and the University’s Cultural Activities and Public Events Committee.
